Your First Year


In your first year, you will be exposed to many different types of engagements. You will work under close supervision on assigned segments of the engagements progressing to substantial responsibility for assignments. The audit department has minimal travel the first year. The tax and BAS departments seldom have overnight travel in the first year. You will experience different industry and service niches and begin to focus on an area you find of interest.

As a new employee you will be matched with a mentor who will help you adjust to the professional atmosphere and guide you in obtaining your goals.

If you have not passed the CPA exam, you will be encouraged to prepare for and be compensated for time taking the CPA exam. During your first year MC&E will provide you with around 80 hours of continuing professional education (CPE).

As a first year Audit staff team member a few of the many tasks you might perform include:

  • Reconcile accounts payable and test vendor invoices
  • Observe inventory counts
  • Test bank statement reconciliations
  • Set up audit files
  • Draft financial statements and auditors' reports
  • Test depreciation computations
  • Control confirmation test work for verification of account balances, such as investments, accounts receivable and notes payable
  • Set up depreciation schedules, amortization schedules and financial statements

Maner, Costerisan & Ellis, P.C. has the largest audit department in the mid-Michigan area and is respected for the quality of work performed. With approximately 28 full time audit professionals (including 7 principals) we can audit most types of organizations including – school districts, professional associations, affordable housing, manufacturing, community colleges, not for profit organizations and others. For the few industries in which we choose not to perform audits, we utilize our alliance with BDO Seidman to service these organizations.

In your first year as a Tax staff team member you will perform most of the following tasks along with others:

  • Attend a one week AICPA intensive tax training program
  • Use the CCH Tax Research Network and RIA’s Checkpoint software to research tax issues
  • Prepare individual, corporate, partnerships, estate, trust, pension and tax-exempt returns on ProSystem Fx Engagement software
  • Review general ledgers for tax adjustments
  • Prepare tax projections under different income and deduction scenarios

In your first year as a team member of the Business Accounting Services (BAS) staff you will experience a large variety of tasks, including:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Prepare required governmental reports
  • Reconcile bank statements and prepare year end statements
  • Prepare employee earnings records, payroll and payroll tax reports
  • Provide controllership services
  • Provide monthly, quarterly and annual closing services
  • Provide traditional payroll services
Our BAS staff also provides software systems support and training, including:

  • Creative Solutions
  • NetClient CBSASP-internet checkbook solution program
  • Quickbooks
  • Peachtree
  • And other proprietary systems

Regardless of which department you start in, your first year will be exciting, challenging and busy. The staff at MC&E will do all it can to make the transition into your new career a smooth and enjoyable experience.
